Things are looking dire for the New Jersey Devils as they look to claw their way back into the first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes, which we've covered in our Hurricanes vs. Devils Game 3 prediction, NHL picks, and player props.  

Injury-ravaged and down by two games, the Devils are underdogs across our best sports betting sites but hope the friendly confines of Prudential Center will offer the tonic to cure what ails. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are the Stanley Cup odds favorites entering Friday's contest (8 p.m. ET, TBS).

The first two games went about as poorly as possible for the Devils, who scored two goals and suffered multiple debilitating injuries. While the status of Luke Hughes and Brenden Dillon for Game 3 hasn't been confirmed, both players missed practice. 

Even if the pair play on Friday, the Devils are in trouble in the series. The Hurricanes won the expected goals battle 4.48 to 2.01 in Game 1 and 5.71 to 3.29, with the Devils relying on Jacob Markstrom to keep things close.

Why back the Under in Game 3

While Markstrom - who has 3.9 goals saved above expected - has been the standout player of the series (aside from injuring Dillon), Frederik Andersen is also in top form.

The Canes' netminder has 3.3 goals saved above expected through two games, and both goaltenders sit in the top five of that category, with Markstrom in second and Andersen fourth.

While the abundance of chances in Game 2 would usually lead to at least six goals, each team's netminder's elite play facilitated the Under. 

I don't expect nearly as many chances in Game 3, but I'm not overly concerned if there are, given how dialed in both goaltenders are. Despite their personnel concerns and recent subpar record at Prudential Center, I expect the Devils to give it a real go on home ice. New Jersey is 4-7-1 at home since Jack Hughes' injury. 

Although the Hurricanes are markedly inferior on the road, Andersen is playing at his best, and the team is bubbling with confidence and momentum. That should be enough to overwhelm a shorthanded Devils team plagued by inconsistency even before their recent injuries.

Meier should be shooting on sight in Game 3, as in the opening two games in Raleigh. The Devils forward had two shots in Game 1 and five in Game 2. While the two-shot output doesn't instil a ton of confidence, Meier had nine attempted shots. Seven of his shots were blocked or missed the net. In Game 3, he attempted 10 shots, showcasing his commitment to getting pucks thrown toward Andersen.

Martinook is riding the hot hand, and I expect it to continue in Game 3. The Canes' unlikely hero has three points in two games, including a goal and assist in Game 2. The Devils will be looking to test Andersen early and often, especially as they try to build momentum from the noise of the home crowd. Hamilton hit the Under in the first two games, but it wasn't because of a lack of attempts. He had seven shot attempts in Game 2 and seven in Game 1.
