🗳️ Who will the Titans draft at No. 1?
The Titans are selecting Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in tonight's NFL draft. It's been the worst-kept secret in football for quite a while, and even the team's officials have alluded to it recently.
Ward's odds imply a 99.5% probability he'll hear his name called first by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tonight. He's as close to a guarantee as draft picks can come, with some of our best sports betting apps even closing top pick markets early in anticipation that Ward goes No. 1.
🏈 Why are the Titans picking Cam Ward?
Ward was a standout performer in the NCAA, peaking during his final collegiate season with Miami. The 22-year-old threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and seven interceptions with the Hurricanes and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.
Simply put, Tennessee is drafting Ward because the Titans haven't seen a signal-caller post similar statistics since Warren Moon in 1990.
The AFC South squad has struggled in recent years, with the team appearing ready to move on from second-year starter Will Levis. The former Kentucky product threw for 3,899 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions during his two years under center, compiling an abysmal 5-16 record.
Tennessee general manager Mike Borgonzi and head coach Brian Callahan - neither of whom were with the franchise when it selected Levis in 2023 - appear keen to hand-select a quarterback to lead the franchise forward. After all, the Titans have been a revolving door at the position since Ryan Tannehill departed in 2023.
Callahan's arrival after four successful seasons as Cincinnati's offensive coordinator was supposed to act as a catalyst for an offensive revival. However, Tennessee finished in the bottom six in the league for a third consecutive year in many offensive categories, namely points scored.
This is all to say the Titans appear to have found a player they believe will change the direction of their franchise after years of rebuilding and restructuring. Ward was a difference-maker for three college programs, and as Tennessee prepares to turn in the No. 1 pick, the Titans hope he'll have the same impact for them.
